Meet the Mehl's
Submitted by Luis on Mon, 12/19/2011 - 02:47CCCKC was contacted recently about possibly providing some interviews from our hometown heroes, the Duct Tape & Zip Ties Powerwheels team. Part of that team includes Sharon and Steve Mehl, and their son Brian. In reality the Duct Tape and Zip Ties team comprised two families working together with members of Make:KC and CCCKC to build and race their vehicle. The Mehls do a great job of explaining their backgrounds and their journey into not only becoming ranked 4th in the world among Powerwheels racers but becoming full-time members of the hackerspace! Watch each of Sharon, Steve's, and Brian's video below. Share these videos to show people what goes on at a hackerspace!

Hammerspace Gets New Tables! CCCKC gets a new Door!
Submitted by jbookout on Tue, 12/13/2011 - 23:40This past Thursday, and in fact all this past week CCCKC/Hammerspace was been busy with progress. Last Thursday CCCKC members helped build a new table for Hammerspace's biggest room.
This bigger room was then promptly filled with hackers! It's one of the first Thursday general meetings where we've really filled out the space, it almost felt crowded, which is saying quite a bit since Hammerspace offers about 4 times the area of our previous premises.
On Friday, Hammerspace hosted a Lady's Craft Night where old T-Shirts were transformed into handbags. Make sure to watch the google group for the next Lady's night. (I'm told it will be a monthly event.)
Saturday we were in full swing with a zombie themed birthday party for one of our long standing members.
On Sunday we started progress on a double sided white-board door that also serves as a noise barrier between CCCKC's room at Hammerspace, and the room that houses the CCCKC CNC.
The door has a foam core for noise reduction and both sides are covered by a white-board like material. We attempted to glue the white-board slabs onto the support material, but unfortunately they were too smooth to adhere with the glue we chose...despite the shear number of clamps available...Not to be stopped, we simply screwed the white-board material to the door and moved on. Monday we finished trimming the door to fit the frame, and cut out the notches necessary for the hinges. All that was left on Tuesday was to get the right screws and hang the door!
It still needs a knob...
Turning a Servo Into a Brushed DC Motor Controller
Submitted by jestin on Tue, 12/06/2011 - 16:13
Servos are among the most useful components in the inventor's arsenal. I know that whenever I need to make something move on it's own, a servo is usually the first thing I reach for. A couple years ago, CCCKC member Craig Berschiedt taught me how to turn a normal RC project servo into a continuous rotation servo. The trick involves modifying the mechanics of the axel to rotate a full 360 degrees, but also to modify the electronics to allow for controlling speed and direction of rotation rather than position. Basically, you replace the existing potentiometer with a pair of resistors for a hard-wired voltage divider, and the remaining circuitry takes care of the rest.
Now he has taken the hack one step further, and replaced the mechanics of the servo themselves, leaving a relatively cheap DC brushed motor controller. More details can be found on his blog or on thingiverse. Nice work, Craig!

Come by and see all the benefits CCCKC members have thanks to this new partnership! Thursday night 7:00 p.m. meetings are still free and open to the public, just excuse the mess as we are still settling in. Details about the location are in post below this one but if you need directions please call or post to the CCCKC google group. Also if you see some of us wandering about the grounds, help us! Our eyes are still adjusting.
